What are the benefits of Cedar vs Treated Lumber?

Choosing the right wood for your deck can make all the difference in its appearance, durability, and maintenance. Whether you prioritize aesthetic appeal or long-term durability, both cedar and treated lumber bring unique advantages to your outdoor space.

Cedar: Naturally beautiful and resistant to rot, cedar offers a classic look with warm tones. Its natural oils act as preservatives, making it less likely to warp or crack over time. Plus, it’s lightweight and easy to work with, making installation a breeze.

Treated Lumber: Pressure-treated wood is a cost-effective and highly durable option. Designed to resist moisture, insects, and decay, it’s perfect for long-lasting decks that can withstand the elements. Treated lumber also comes with a budget-friendly price tag, giving you great value for your investment.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We replaced and expanded our deteriorated 22-year-old deck in 2024. MGE was selected based on the quality workmanship of another new deck they had done in our subdivision. The very minor fix was done timely and quickly. We are very pleased with MGE.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The deck was installed five years ago and still looks new. Over time, several of the lights on the deck stopped lighting. Little did I realize, animals had chewed through several of the wires.

I called the MGE office and within a few days, Tony came out. He quickly identified the problems and fixed all the wires. What great support five years after installation. .

I would definitely recommend Tony and his company for deck work. My experience has been excellent.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We wholeheartedly recommend MGE Carpentry! Many years ago they built us a beautiful deck that we love to spend time on. Recently our deck lights stopped working and we discovered they were no longer available. Tony took a look at them and found a way to fix them! We are happy to say that the lights work better than ever now thanks to Tony & MGE Carpentry.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are very pleased with the deck MGE Carpentry did for us. The entire team (Ralph, Tony, Jamie, Mike, Brooks) was very professional and great to work with through the process - would definitely recommend MGE Carpentry.

After seeing the work that Jamie does, we decided to have our porch done. We can't wait for Jamie to come back and build our porch! He does fantastic work—even the building inspector commented on how beautiful the deck is.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have had MGE do many projects in my home, basement, 2 decks. They do quality work and stand by their craftsmanship. Tony and Mike are easy to talk to and willing to help figure things out. I had a unprofessional home inspector ( for a buyer) state the "Structural foundation of the deck was an issue" Tony came out and inspected a deck they installed in 2019, took pictures, and summarized that my deck was secure and still have ~15-20 years of life left. They didn't have to, but also fixed a railing the inspectors broke and (Inspectors claimed my railing was broken and I had video of them breaking it)

Thank you!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I reached out to this company for a quote to redo my mother’s deck, and I’m so grateful for their support throughout the process. They’ve come out multiple times just to accommodate my mom’s situation, which truly means a lot to us. Tony and Mike are genuinely good people—honest, patient, and always going above and beyond to help. It’s rare to find that kind of integrity these days. Thank you so much, and I’m really looking forward to doing business with you.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Incredibly happy with the Finished product. Very Professional TEAM (Ralph, Bill & Tony)!
Started a MANS Lumber in Canton. Gave us their recommended list of Deck Companies. We wanted options: Composite - TREX or Pressure Treated Wood - then stain. Called most of the companies on the MANS recommended list. Got 3 companies to quote the job with both TREX and Wood Options. Most wanted to quote TREX only. FYI - TREX only is quite a bit more expensive. We chose MGE Carpentry. Ralph came out to quote the project and I knew immediately he was knowledgeable and honest. He didn't try to push me to TREX he patiently have gave us all options. We chose wood flooring and Black TREX railing! The combo looks great. Bill was their carpenter and he worked thru some tough weather in March to get the job done. He did a beautiful job! We couldn't be happier!

I highly recommend MGE Carpentry if you want a deck. They are extremely easy to work with, reasonably priced and were very receptive to the modifications we wanted, especially the ramp in addition to stairs. Their construction crew is fabulous: skilled, efficient, and friendly!! Five star service when other companies are cutting corners.
