Frequently Asked Questions
Do I want a Wood or Composite Deck?
The first thing to ask yourself is how long will I be in this home? If you
plan on staying in your home for 5 years or more, a low maintenance composite
deck will save you time and money in yearly care over a typical wood deck in the
long term. If you plan on being in your current home for less than 5 years, you
may not realize the cost benefit of a composite deck in the short term and a
wood deck may be a more cost efficient option. A wood deck however is often
viewed as a "chore" to prospective homebuyers. Budget is often the main factor
in deciding between wood or composite decking. CustomDecks.com will help to
design a deck of any material to fit your needs and budget.
How much does a typical deck cost?
We don't build a "typical" deck. All of our decks are custom designed for each individual home. The cost of different decks varies greatly depending on the size and material used. We will design a deck to meet your budget. Call today for your no cost in home estimate!
How big of a Deck should I build?
We will design a deck to meet your needs. Just tell us how you want to use your deck and we will make sure you're deck will be more than comfortable. If you have a 48" round table with seating, you will minimally want a 12' x 12' area to comfortably seat everyone and have room to walk around.
Do I have different choices in Railing?
There are many different railing options to choose from. Standard 2x2 spindle railing, Deckorator® brand aluminum balusters, and even glass railings! Great for those decks with a view.
The Deck Plan shows a Post right in front of my doorwall. Can it be removed?
Post locations are determined by the size of the support beam. Larger support beams can span further distances and thereby reduce the number of posts required. In most cases an undesirable post location can be relocated or removed by installing an oversized beam. Such a modification would incur extra cost, but many homeowners view it as a worthwhile expense.
How long will it take to build my Custom Deck?
Typically our decks take anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to complete. This depends entirely on the size and complexity of the deck. Once we begin your deck our crew will be dedicated to that deck until the job is completed. We will never pull a crew off of your deck to start another project.
I want to get my Deck started as soon as possible. When does your building season begin?
We build decks all year round! As long as the frost line is shallow enough that we can dig our footings we will build. Building in the cold weather will not harm the wood framing material of the deck. When installing composite decking minor adjustments have to be made to accommodate for expansion of the material in the warmer weather.
